The world of code-generation has changed with AI and Vibe Coding. We already have AI assisted contributions to our code base. AI is here to stay and its influence will even more rapidly grow on us. This brings both opportunities and challenges to the traditional model of open-source contribution. So how as an Open Source Foundation should we adapt to embrace the opportunities and mitigate the challenges and provide guidance to our contributors. Some of the questions are, for example:
- How can we leverage Vibe and AI enhanced coding to do more with our volunteer community?
- What rules and safeguards should be put in place to ensure contributions meet standards still?
- Can AI help us with these coding standards?
- What security implications are there to the supply chain with AI coding?
- What roles should we use AI coding tools for?
- What does it mean for Interns in the future are we training Software Developers, AI script writers or AI Code Reviewers?
- What does it mean for our open-source license, does it have any implications on it?
- Does it help or hinder sustainable supportability of Code?
Let’s discuss these and other questions people may have to help us understand as an Open Source Foundation what guidelines should we put in place, what changes are needed to contributing guidelines. We realise this topic may also have huge relevance to other DPGs and Open Source projects and we would welcome them to join and give their perspective.
