Star Contributor of the Month – Shubham Kumar

We are pleased to recognize Shubham as the Mifos Star Contributor in this January 2026 edition of Star Contributor of the Month. Shubham has been an outstanding contributor over the past month. Although relatively new to the Mifos Initiative Shubham has quickly integrated with a number of different project teams, identified ways he can assist and made changes. He has been excellent in picking up on best practice that can be adopted across our repos such as the updating and improvement of our contribution guides and the addition of correct text across all existing files showing our licence. The discipline, rigor, structure, and ongoing momentum that Shubham has brought came at a critical time, helping us as we are trying to improve some of the governance and consistency across our GitHub instance. Shubham has been nominated by a number of members of the community that have been working with him and recognised his exemplar characteristics and behaviours. We look forwards to continuing working with Shubham across the community and his commit rate has set a new target to be beaten by other contributors. Well done Shubham for a well deserved Star Contributor award.

Brief Bio:

I’m a software developer with a passion for creating solutions to real-world problems. I’m very interested in understanding the needs of users and take complete ownership of what I create, right from the code to scalability. My passion for open source has driven me to work on large projects such as the Mifos Initiative, where I have experience working with international teams, dealing with complex code, and optimizing legacy code. Learning, problem-solving, and optimizing systems to make them faster, cleaner, and more robust are some of my favorite things to do.

Relevant Skills/OS Experience:

Languages & Core: JavaScript (ES6+), SQL.

Frontend Development: Angular, React.js (MERN Stack), HTML/CSS.

Backend Development: Node.js, Express.js.

Database Management: MongoDB, SQL (RDBMS).

DevOps & Tools: Git, GitHub, Docker.

My Impact:

How I discovered Mifos:

I discovered Mifos on LinkedIn. After that, I started reading the Mifos documentation to understand how the platform works and how it solves real-world financial inclusion problems.

Contributions I’ve made thus far:

I have contributed more than 102 pull requests to the Mifos X project, adding over 30,000 lines of code. My work includes implementing new features, fixing issues in existing functionality, and making meaningful UI/UX improvements.

Project I’m currently working on or planning to:

Centralized Reusable View System for the Mifos X Web App

I am actively working on and researching a centralized system for reusable views and UI components in the Mifos X web application. This initiative focuses on reducing code duplication, improving UI consistency, and enhancing maintainability, scalability, and developer productivity.

Impact I have had (or hope to have) on the poor:

To me, writing code isn’t just about syntax or features, it’s about the people who depend on it. I know that this software is a lifeline for the unbanked, and by making it more stable and efficient, I’m doing my part to help fight poverty. My goal is simply to make sure the technology works reliably, so the organizations using it can focus on what matters most: reaching the people who need help.

Advice to the Mifos Community:

Never be afraid to ask questions if you don’t understand a problem or any part of the project. The Mifos community is always supportive, welcoming, and eager to help. Asking questions not only helps you learn faster but also strengthens collaboration and makes the contribution journey more enjoyable for everyone.
