We are pleased to recognize Avinash Vijayvargiya as the Mifos Star Contributor in this June 2026 edition of Star Contributor of the Month. Avinash has been a standout contributor and leader within our community, recognized for his extensive technical impact and dedicated mentorship.

Beginning his open-source journey with us in 2022 by modernizing the Android client, Avinash has since expanded his footprint across both frontend and core backend ecosystems. As a Google Summer of Code (GSoC) alumnus turned Org Admin and Mentor, he has been vital in guiding the next generation of developers into our ecosystem. Most recently, Avinash has been driving impactful backend modernization, collaborating closely with our community architects on migrating Apache Fineract to a CQRS (Command Query Responsibility Segregation) architecture by integrating and consuming the new command processor. His dedication to building robust, event-driven banking infrastructure directly furthers our global mission of financial inclusion.

Avinash Vijayvargiya – India

Brief Bio:

I am a Software Engineer 2 at JPMorgan Chase, where I focus on modernizing cloud infrastructure by migrating legacy codebases to AWS. My daily responsibilities involve developing scalable solutions using AWS Lambda and AWS Glue. Alongside my corporate role, I am deeply passionate about open source and community mentorship, currently serving as an Org Admin and Mentor for Google Summer of Code.

My open source journey began in 2022 when I contributed to migrating the android-client to Kotlin and integrating it with the fineract-android-sdk. This foundational experience opened doors to leadership roles within the community, where I now help guide the next generation of developers as a GSoC Mentor and Org Admin. Most recently, I have been collaborating closely with Aleks on migrating Apache Fineract to a CQRS (Command Query Responsibility Segregation) architecture. Working alongside such an incredible mentor has been a definitive highlight of my open source journey, driving my passion for building robust, event-driven systems.

My Impact:

How I discovered Mifos:

I first discovered the Mifos initiative back in 2022 while exploring open-source organizations for Google Summer of Code (GSoC). I was looking for a community where I could challenge myself technically while working on a project with real-world social impact. Mifos stood out immediately because of their incredible global mission to drive financial inclusion, and once I made my first contribution to the Android client migration, I knew I wanted to stay involved for the long run.

Contributions I’ve made thus far:

My contributions span both technical development and community leadership. Impact I have had (or hope to have) on the poor:

Through my contributions to the Mifos and Apache Fineract, I hope to help bridge the financial inclusion gap for underserved and low-income communities globally. By building and modernizing robust, open-source banking infrastructure, the ultimate goal is to make essential financial services more accessible, affordable, and reliable for the people who need them most. Knowing that scalable code can directly empower individuals to secure loans, manage savings, and build better livelihoods is the exact kind of impact I strive to create.

What’s rewarding about working on the Mifos Project:

The most rewarding part of this journey has been knowing that the code I contribute has a tangible impact on diverse communities across different global regions. Realizing that your everyday efforts translate into technology that empowers people worldwide is incredibly fulfilling and makes every bit of hard work entirely worth it.

Advice to the Mifos Community:

Don’t be afraid to take that first step, no matter how daunting a large codebase might seem. The Mifos and Apache Fineract communities are incredibly welcoming and full of brilliant minds who are eager to help you grow. Seek out mentorship, ask questions, and embrace the learning process. Open source is as much about the community and collaboration as it is about the code, once you dive in, you’ll find that the mentorship you receive and the skills you build will shape your journey for years to come.

Honestly, there isn’t a single place in the world I don’t want to explore! I’m open to going anywhere whether it’s diving into a fast-paced new city, exploring a completely different culture, or just finding a great court for a game of badminton.

Outside of software engineering and open source, I love staying active on the badminton court, it’s my favorite way to clear my head and stay sharp after a long day of coding. When I’m not playing badminton, I have a massive soft spot for board games.
