Mailing Lists

There are a number of ways to stay abreast of ongoing progress of Mifos development. Communication tools to foster collaboration and discussion are detailed below.

How Our Listservs Work

Our listservs (electronic mailing lists), hosted on Sourceforge are the primary means of communication in the Mifos community. To engage yourself with other participants and learn what's going on, sign up.
  • Read the sections below.
  • Sign up for the listserv you are interested in.
  • Once you are approved, you'll star receiving mails from the listserv.
  • To reply to the community, respond to the email.
  • To post your questions and comments, use the appropriate listserv email address.
  • You can also search the archives to read previous posts (and to avoid repeating posts!)

Etiquette

The following list of core values should be your guiding light when posting mailing list messages:

  • Politeness
  • Respect
  • Trust
  • Humility

The following guidelines are designed to facilitate effortless communication on the Mifos mailing lists. Please be a considerate list citizen and abide by them!

  • search first! If there is already a thread on the topic you'd like to post, reply to it. It's fine to start a new thread if the existing one is very old, but consider including a link to the existing thread in your new post.
  • choose a meaningful subject line and keep related messages in the thread. Your emails will become part of a permanent record that will help future developers, Mifos specialists, project managers, and others
  • quote only the relevant portion of the email to which you are replying, then post your response below the quoted text
  • post in plain text, not HTML
  • many on the list have low-bandwidth connections, so please don't attach files larger than 10 kilobytes. Host them somewhere else and provide a link to the download. It is also a good idea to include a secure hash like an SHA-1 checksum of the file so others will know the content was not tampered with. The command-line program "sha1sum" works fine for this for this purpose.
  • shorten long hyperlinks using a service like TinyURL or Snipr.
  • see netiquette and ESR's advice on asking smart questions for more ideas on proper etiquette
